Promoting Peaceful Co-existence and Education for Fulani Girls

Suudu Baaba Foundation, established in 2017 and registered in 2018, is dedicated to improving the lives of marginalized Fulani communities through education, advocacy, and socio-economic empowerment. Our latest initiative, Promoting Peaceful Co-existence and Education of Fulani Girls, addresses long-standing conflicts between Fulani herdsmen and crop farmers while tackling early marriage and low educational attainment among Fulani girls.

Spanning Ashanti, Bono East, and Northern Regions over 15 months, the project mobilizes herdsmen for conflict-free grazing practices, engages traditional authorities to secure grazing lands, and raises awareness on the value of girls’ education. Through training workshops, stakeholder dialogues, and community sensitization, we aim to reduce conflicts, secure land rights, and increase school enrolment for Fulani girls fostering peace, inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods.

Over the past two years, Suudu Baaba Foundation, with support from STAR-Ghana Foundation, successfully implemented the Action for Voice and Inclusion Development (AVID) Project across Ashanti, Northern, and Bono East Regions. The project empowered over 900 Fulbe herdsmen with sustainable grazing and conflict resolution skills, leading to reduced disputes with crop farmers and improved livestock productivity.

In parallel, targeted sensitization campaigns reached more than 500 community members, boosting awareness and support for girl-child education. This effort contributed to a 25% increase in school enrollment among Fulbe girls, alongside scholarships for three beneficiaries to pursue tertiary education.

Key achievements include the initiation of grazing land demarcation in collaboration with traditional authorities, strengthened stakeholder partnerships, and the establishment of local task forces to sustain peace. The project’s holistic approach combining skills training, policy engagement, and community advocacy has set a strong foundation for long-term social inclusion, education, and livelihoods improvement in Fulbe communities.
